I can help on "Poly". This refers to paints with metallic "sparkle" content, rather than solid colors. The paint industries older term was "opal" or "opalescent" where the "sparkle" literally was derived from the shell of some ocean going shell fish and probably created in engineering labs as well. "Opalescence" was first used in the late '20s on up into the '50s and occasionally later I believe. "Pearl" finishes of today are probably still opalescent.
