The Mopar Performance Engines book contains the following: "Aluminum Silver (P4529148). This color was used as far back as the 1940s and as late as the early 1960s. Most of the early Hemis and 1950s engines were painted this color. "Gold Metallic (P4529149). The 'Golden Lion' engines of the late 1950s and early 1960s as well as the 'Golden Commando' and DeSoto 'Adventurer' engines used the color." This isn't a complete answer, but it does correlate with Bruce Smith's silver Fireflite engine and his guess the Golden Commandos were painted differently. It also supports Jack Lewis's claim "the Golden Commando was painted Bronze/Copper or Gold." Unfortunately, there were some members have made references to red 361s. The Mopar Performance Engine book doesn't refer to any engines being painted prior to 1964, but this manual wasn't written to be an all encompassing authoritative source on engine paint, so it may have happened. Two other possibilities are these were either repainted, or some pervert on the Chrysler assembly line went out of his way just to confuse owners 40 years later :-) Dave.
