I remember removing a handle on my 56 Dodge back in the 60s the way my neighbor showed me. Insert a medium size screwdriver (about 1/4 inch shaft) between the handle and washer, rotate it 90 degrees so the blade tip is perpendicular to the door panel, and push on the clip. Bend the end of a butter knife up 1/4" at 90 degrees. You can then slip it under the handle and push on the spring clip to release the handle.
I have never understood the need for that special tool. I've removed dozens with the old bent butter knife.
