As far as the engine that started this thread, you know it needs a complete teardown to clean up all the metal particles. I'm sure you'll find at the least bearing damage throughout. The lifters that you speak of had a small cup for the pushrods to sit in up through '67. In '68 they switched to the larger pushrods without the tapered ends. On my 383B I
switched over to a modern camshaft design and bought the appropriate pushrods to go with it. With the RB383 you should look for a 440 cam and lifters along with the pushrods. Personally I'm a fan of Comp cams and they have a very thorough catalog you can request and get an idea on what cam profile you might like. As far as an engine rebuild kit, if you're not looking for NOS parts, Summit has some good prices on short block kits. One is to buy the Redline Break-In Additive and use about 3 oz of it with each oil change. The other, even easier, is to buy a can of STP, which has the right amount of ZDDP in it, when you buy the oil and filter and put the STP in along
with the new oil. The advantage of the Redline is that it's actually a little cheaper per dose and is easy to poor. The STP is thick and hard to pour. But the STP is available anywhere so it's pretty convenient.
