Re: [FWDLK] SMS

I've never used SMS, but over the years I've  seen the comments.
Looks like to me it's a good company which has outgrown the owners ability to cope.
I think some good software could solve the problems. I'm guessing that 50% of their orders are for sheet-goods.
Headliners or upholstery materials. If this is the case there is no reason that the following could not happen.
Order comes in, computer inventory is checked, if in stock a packing slip is made with the mailing label and
sent to the person assigned to fill quick orders.
He/she pulls the roll, cuts off the required amount, packs it and ships it out, same day or the next.
Right there 1/2 half of his customers is handled with the best of experiences. Can't get any better.
There is NO reason for a simple order not being instantly filled. This would take one person to handle.
If out of stock, then it gets in the quick line and waits for the stock to come in.

If it requires making items, then it goes into the line-up and filled on a 1st come basis.
This could also be improved by all the needed parts, door panels, sheet-goods, etc. being placed into a bin.
Then whoever is going to make the parts to have the needed things all in a bin when they start on the order and not have to hunt down the needed stuff.

Maybe Roger van Hoy could mention this to the owner, it has to be an improvement to his work flow.
But, then what do I know,

I'm not presently in need of any products from SMS,

I've said, for a while now, that someone should create an
(informal) business in which to represent customers and
to make personal visits to SMS, to ensure quick and
fair and accurate transactions.

That business could also arrange to ship the products
to their clients...but that might entail a lot of logistical
complications and expenses.

Too bad, that such a service is needed, but, unfortunately,
it is.

SMS is local to me.  I started buying from them 27 years ago when they were small.

My last experience getting a headliner kit was less than satisfactory.  Some of the staff are less than exemplary.  After four months, no product.  I drove out and talked personally with the owner, Doug Pollock, and had the product within a week.

I've dealt with SMS a few times.  When it came to material for my Fury and material and front and rear interior panels for my Belvedere convertible, they came through without a hitch.  I guess I was just lucky.  It took about 6 months to get the door panels, but they are right on with authenticity.  After hearing some of these horror stories, I guess I was lucky.
