Fern,  since you're found the build sheet, check the engine code on the top line between the trim code and transmission code. This is the sales code.  If it shows 71, that is the standard 300L 360hp, 413.  If it shows 82, it would be the 425hp 426.  However, if it shows 82 it should also have sales code 709 for special order.

Sales codes are different than build codes on the broadcast sheet.  The 582 sales code for 1965 is a white convertible top.  I don't have Galen's part code book so I can't confirm a 582 engine build code.

You might also check your fender tag.  The numbers under AB on the second line will also have the engine code (i.e. 71 or 82).  Note that for 1965, a standard engine with the crankcase vent system will be coded 99 (a special order engine is coded 91).

Ok you explain to me what 5 82 re engine option on the 
build sheet means! Build sheets normally don't lie and it's the correct one for 
the car. Everything on the build sheet agrees with the fender tag. It 
certainly isn't the normal stock 360 hp  single 4 barrel 413 
engine.  Also, the wheel covers options fall under box 48 and not 582 on a 
chrysler as quoted by Tom Miller. One must remember that back in those days, if 
you had the right contacts at chrysler one could order pretty well any options 
that weren't standard issue. I will be in touch with Galen Govier shortly 
to get some clarifications.

Fern,

I agree with John, but have learned to never say *never* when it 
comes to just what you could get from the factory back in the day.  


With that said, I'd bet that broadcast sheet code 582 is not an 
engine code but the code for "Sport Wheel Covers".  

I found this broadcast sheet reference:  http://papentastars.tripod.com/id21.html that 
shows both the 3 digit numeric codes from '62 - '68 and the later 
alphanumeric codes.  

As always, you're mileage may vary.....  :-)  But all of 
the engine codes seem to have a leading zero.  The Max Wedge 426 
shows code 009.  

It is fun to think though that somebody back in the day may have 
pulled some strings and had a 4-speed 300L convertible built with this 
engine.  It'd be a handful for sure!

Mmmm 
something is amiss here.

The 
425 hp, 12.5 to 1 compression ratio engine was an out and out racing 
engine that was very much advised against street use. It’s last production 
was in early model year 1964 for only the mid-size Dodge and 
Plymouth.

The 
only RPO engine for the 300L was the single four barrel 413 rated at 340 
hp. While there were two four-barrel 413’s available beginning with the 
300E and ending with the 300K ( and only as an option in the case of the 
300K) none of had 12.5 compression nor were any of them rated at over 390 
hp. 300’s were always to be a very high performance yet very streetable 
cars designed as “bankers hot rods” as stated by one automotive 
journalist, Tom McCahill if memory serves me right. The max wedge engines 
were anything but very streetable and certainly not suited for driving to 
and from the banker place of business on a daily basis. The 300 letter 
series never received any 426 or 440 engines, at least as 
RPO’s.

I 
am certainly not challenging Galen Grovier on this as he is the recognized 
guru and his record of accuracy is impeccable but I do believe there is 
some misinterpreting of data somewhere along the 
line.

I finally 
found the build sheet for my 1965 300L 4 speed convertible. It was tucked 
in a top corner of the rear vertical back seat, hidden behind the rear 
cardboard cover. The tag was very fragile but I managed to pretty get it 
all out. I was then referring to Galen Govier reference book and found 
that engine code being 582 stands for 426 wedge with dual four barrel 
carbs, 425 HP, 12.5/1 compression.

Apparently, that engine in 
question is the max wedge engine with the cross rams that had special 
exhaust manifolds to get around the steering gear box, etc. I would be 
looking to getting any and all information regarding this 
engine.

Now the 
question is, does anyone have one of those engines kicking around? Up 
to this find, I was trying to make up my mind if I should restore it or 
sell it in as is condition  but I now will have to rethink this very 
carefully. I wasn't even aware that this engine was available 
with that model of Mopar.
