I'm sure this question has been replied to many times before, but I'd add the following:
TDC is on the compression stroke, both valves closed. Had the pleasure (misfortune to some) of working on my son's '79 Bronco. Previous owner messed with the distributor and I had to move it one tooth to set the initial timing. Even had to break out my Lisle flexible "screwdriver" to adjust idle jets. It was rusted up a bit but got it working. I don't use it on my 300K as the previous owner of that put a Barry Grant Stage 3 (forerunner of the Race Demon) that has idle jets on the float bowls. ___________________ Dave "Dinty" Moore Wallingford,

In other words, #1 piston TDC until the #1 piston is at TDC again.
