Brad, when I got my car, its former (original-) owner
had installed an auxiliary starter button, and had installed it
where the hand brake warning light would be located.
Really neat spot for it to be installed.
When I later installed a hand brake warning light, I re-located the
starter button to slightly behind the lower dashboard, so that
it now acts as a hidden theft deterrent to even a FWDLK-
knowledgeable car thief.
The reason that that aux-starter was installed ( I discovered)
was due to a faulty neutral starter switch which is located near the
master cylinder, on the intake manifold, which some-times allowed the
starter
to engage when the "N" button would be pushed with the car running.
Unfortunately, by the time that I discovered that there was a simple
fix (replacement-) to the starter's engagement, I'd already bent-back the
starter-contact-bar, at the rear of the push-button housing, to prevent any
further starter-engagements when the "N" button would be pushed in.
Since then, I've only-always used that 'hidden' aux-starter button to
start Horrie
and the Neutral button works fine.

To All,
Thanks to all responders to my question. Looks Like I overreacted to
the procedure in the manual. I have been given assurances that it
should be a simple fix. I'll remove the cable and proceed with bending
the tabs and checking out the switch. Will give results upon completion.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
