my guess would be that if there is only a small current running through the car (small spark) at the time the bat term is connected, there is either a short in the system or there is some component of the system using power (interior light, clock, etc). If you are sure there are no system components that would use power with the key in the off position, I think there is a small short in the system.
Usually, you can connect an ammeter (volt meter switched to measure current (amps)) in between the battery post and the battery terminal. Then, start pulling fuses until the current drops and you should at least be able to find the circuit with the problem.
