what is only
slightly intriguing is the fact hundreds of companies have no problem making
replacement parts like water and fuel pumps, aftermarket cylinder heads,
manifolds etc... all fit and function within a specific tolerance, and are
alone somewhat complex multi-part components... BUT... no one has made
reproduction/replacement sheetmetal or rubber parts that qualify as a good
fit! not just forwardlook either- i have very common stuff like chevelles and
GTOs, a 57 chevy and ford- even those cars and their available parts present a
margin of inaccuracy as far as replacement panels available [that is unless
you but NOS or the full floor/rocker or full qtr sections] and every
weatherseal has some degree of error- year one sells siderail weatherseals
that are stellar in appearance and fit, but are too hard, soffseal is very
pliable, but the upper "corner" isnt molded exactly as original and presents a
wind noise... whenever i deal with GM a-bodies- i try to recover original side
rail weatherseals for that reason, the doors and trunk always work out well
with repro rubber, though- forget which company it is- some gaskets are too
rigid- just did a 71 ss last spring and ran into a harder-than-needed trunk
gasket...
as for fwdlk cars- i hate to even say the name, but, asid
from the non-molded ends/terminations, JC Whitney offers rolls of weatherseal
in the profiles we need for doors, and an acceptable replacement for the trunk
- not to deny the fact the GM full size & a-body trunk seal works very
well on 57/8 plyms, and looks to be a good app for 57/8 desoto and chrysler as
well, though i have a feeling the length may be a little shy for the greater
perimeter of the trunk opening- i'll find out when i get to my firesweep
sometime in the upcoming year perhaps!

About 20 years ago, I loaned Metro an NOS vent seal for them to make a copy of.
Many of their products are made with a more firm rubber compound. My son bought
a kit 10 yers ago of many door seals and gaskets for his GM A body and he had
the same problem. When the rubber is too hard, it doesn't fit right. I don't
know where there is a better seal. Steele or SoftSeal may have something better.
I heard theat Metro has developed a new softer rubber compund. The seals they
are selling today may be stuff made long ago with the old rubber. Call them and
complain, and ask for the new rubber.
The other option is to do what I do. My vent is very stiff (25 years open before
I got it) so I never close it.
I forget what the cowl vent rod grommet looks like. If it a simple round seal,
your local hardware store should have a selection.
