the paintification process was definitely geared towards no drippage onto the insulationizers
they must have used a trunk-o-matic paintifier

since plymouths have only the patches of deadening- what i have done on a few non-stock restos, is an aesthetically pleasing insert treatment to trunk undersides- pre-final paint..... send light doses of the minimal expansion "expandi-foam" into the structure channels- much like or like modern panel anti-vibration measures, once cured, cut back any that has protruded into sight, and do so a good 1/4" inch.... i then cut elk grain vinyl inserts for each section, adhere them, allow to cure- then paint the underside of the trunk- the key is- i have per-cut plastic patterns to make the vinyl insets- they also have center tabs, you set them in place, paint the underside of the deck, and remove them, not a drip or hint of overspray on the vinyl- perhaps chrysler used a somewhat rigid masking element like that
this process with vinyl can be replicated with "snow and ice shield" [the non-coated type] to look like a factory asphalt patch- though not the textured originals in the 50s, but you cant get that anyway... other vinyls or even vinyl with a light underpadding, if the originals looked bubbled down or ruined/missing.
as a side note- here is an original paint unrestored 56 chrysler trunk underside- feel free to check the rest of the pics... this one soaked up and held the paint nicely on its unmasked square deadening- i have seen others with full insulation, that seems unpainted - what this thread was all about
