Since the first Dodge "500" cars (1954) were Indy 500 pace cars, I think that is where the "500" came from. I assumed the "D" meant "Dodge". But then I always assumed the "C" in C300 stood for "Chrysler". It might also be for Daytona 500, but they were released months before the Daytona Speed Week.
