Back in the day, there was a local body shop owner here who had a
reputation for being somewhat less than a perfectionist, he would offer
to put on a "vinyl roof" for no extra cost rather than get a
damaged roof straight enough to look good in paint.

Back in the
early-mid 60's "fake" Vinyl roofs were a big aftermarket
business. Two strips were applied to simulate seams and a substance
something like RhinoLiner was sprayed on in the color of your choice.
Places like Earl Schieb, and Jack Lorens auto painters as well as many
small shops and new and used car dealers would use it as a dress up or
way to inflate the price like undercoating etc.
Always looked kind of
tacky to me. Anyone else remember?

- It would be a cleaver painter who would have to reproduce that roof
should it become damaged.
