Subject : Today's Chrysler retirees luncheon
As a Chrysler retiree I get together every month for lunch and engineering
discussion with my associates. It was timely that one of our engineers who
attended today, started his career at Chrysler as a brake engineer in
1955. I seized upon the opportunity to review with John, our recent
discussion of the purpose of the large tension spring on each
drum. He said that they were installed to eliminate a high frequency
squeal that was occasionally produced on the center plane brakes which were
introduced in 1956 on the 57 models. I believe that was not the
first application of these springs. Of course we know that said
springs carried over onto the Bendix-Chrysler brake systems of the 1960s.
I asked him about the possibility of their providing a
control of concentricity. He said no...they were for
vibrationand the noise that resulted. He also mentioned how he had to
change the brake shoe return spring angles to eliminate other noises. All in the
development phase of course....
