I just did that job on a
55 New Yorker...
Was fairly
painless, but you do need to remove the steering wheel to free the nut at that
end, pull the column down thru the floor board, 4 bolts 7/16" on the cover there
4 bolts on the clamp at the dash support, 3 bolts on the frame 5/8' on the
outside and 13/16" on the inside if yours are like the 55 none were too tight or
frozen, but they can be dirty and grease caked.....
The hardest part was
separating the joint at the steering linkage.
Who will do your
rebuild? Have you gotten any cost quotes?

Subject: [FWDLK] ADVICE ON STEERING GEAR
REMOVAL
Hello Group
Unfortunately my power steering mechanism in my 59 PLYMOUTH is leaking
and needs a rebuild.
The removal of the box seems clear and not too hard since the egine is
out of the car,,but any words of experience???
Can I leave the steering wheel and upper column intact and do everything
by lowering the mechanism out from underneath??
Thanks to all
