YEAH, Owen: that photo may have been a POST-race (or, maybe a PRE-race)
commemorative photo!
The cars were not moving, when they were photographed (wherever, they were photographed). I also just realized why Herb Thomas was so high up in the driver points, he drove the first half of the season for Kiekhaefer before switching to a '56 Chev. His reason for quitting the Kiekhaefer team, Buck Baker was getting all the best equipment and he was always running second best. I'm guessing that the photo on ebay may of come from the March 1-mile dirt track race in Atlanta where the Buck Baker CK 300 came in 1st with the Speedy Thompson CK Dodge in 2nd.Owen-----Original Message----- From: Forward Look Mopar Discussion List [mailto:L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Eastern Sierra Adjustment Services Sent: Saturday, 2 February 2008 10:33 a.m. To: L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [FWDLK] L-FORWARDLOOK Digest - 29 Jan 2008 to 31 Jan 2008 (#2008-31)....Kiekaefer Dodges V 300sI'm not going to try to say that K.'s 500's & 300's never competed against each other, on the same track, but, just opening my "40 Years of Stock Car Racing" (Vol 1), I see that on 1/22/56, @ the AZ State Fairgrounds, on a ONE-mile dirt track, the first three winners (of three, entered by K.) were all in 300's.No K. 500's were entered. For the Daytona Beach 500 mile race, K. entered the winning 300 (Tim Flock), and a 500 placed in 10th spot.K. had two 300's that finished in 19th & 20thA 300 finished in 43rd, and the second 500 finished in 71st (out of 72 entries).Neil Vedder Owen Grigg wrote:According to my NASCAR records Kiekhaefer Dodges and 300's were racing against each other throughout the '56 season. I don't believe Kiekhaefer cared either way whether the Dodge or the Chrysler came in first as longasit had HIS name on the side. The Dodges were strong on the 1/2 miletracks, the 300's recorded wins on just about all distances but were very strongonthe longer 1 mile tracks. Interesting to note the driver points standing at the end of the '56 season... # 1 Buck Baker 300B # 2 Herb Thomas '56 Chev (interestingly I can't see him winning a race but was consistently in 4th or 5th place) # 3 Speedy Thompson he alternated between a 300B and a Dodge. # 4 Lee Petty DodgeOwen-----Original Message----- From: Forward Look Mopar Discussion List [mailto:L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of eastern sierra Adj Services Sent: Friday, 1 February 2008 9:52 p.m. To: L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [FWDLK] L-FORWARDLOOK Digest - 29 Jan 2008 to 31 Jan 2008 (#2008-31) Unless I missed some documemtation, in the puffery (I mean: description- of- item) this is merely a promotional photo, of/for Kiekaefer, as he was too smart to race his Dodges against his 300's in (m-)any races, as the cars served specialized racing purposes; the 300's were too big & heavy to compete in the short county-fair dirt tracks, and the 500's were too underpowered to compete on the big-boy tracks, with the 300's. I do have The History of Daytona Racing ( Vol's #1 & #2) in my office, which lists all NASCAR results, in the 50's, so, varifying any Kiekaefer competition between the 500's & the 300's, on the same track, against each other, will be easy enough to do. BTW, this seller is merely selling re-prints from the original negative, which he is keeping. Still, it's a nice photo, but hardly unique, as there were a lot of publicity shots made of the Kiekaefer racing stable, and its drivers.
