Chapter 1: I think I can top that. I
purchased a $225.00 item on eBay and specifically asked the seller to ship it
UPS. He thought UPS would cost more and thus shipped it
FedEx. I was out of town for about a week (SEMA Show) and upon
return called him to inquire about the package that I had not yet
received. He then gave me a tracking number that showed FedEx delivered
the item 7 days prior.
Chapter 2: At this time I found out that it
was my fault as the buyer for not requiring a signature on delivery. I
filed a claim through PayPal with the seller and he (they) denied any
responsibility for the item as it was delivered but apparently stolen. So
much for PayPal's buyer protection. FedEx also denied any responsibility
as well.
Chapter 3: After 2 months of head scratching,
steaming, calling, and private investigating, I solved the mystery. We
live in a rural area and I just couldn't believe someone would steal it.
The FedEx driver said he left the package in
front of our garage between the two overhead doors (why not on our covered porch
who knows?). Only problem is that location is where our trash container
resides. And, you guessed it. The trash collector came 2 hours after
FedEx left the package and now my priceless unobtainium item resides in the
125 acre land fill some 12 feet under. Where is CSI when you need
them?
Conclusion: I finally got FedEx to accept
responsibility for their driver's stupidity and they now say they will reimburse
the seller, not me!! So once again I am at the mercy of an honest eBay
seller who I trust will send me the reimbursement when he gets it this
week..
Lessons learned: Always ask for signature required
upon delivery. Never give up the hunt!

Shipping News
As I'm sure others have since pointed out,
delivery confirmation would make the buyer's claim moot. With DC, even
if the item were misdelivered, it is no longer your responsibilty, but the
POs.
Now, when I sell on ebay, I always pay for my
postage ONLINE using paypal (of course, buyer pays for shipping). Doing
it this way, delivery confirmation is free, and if it's a small enough item, I
can just drop it in MY OWN mailbox to mail it . . . no trip to the post
office.
I, too, learned this lesson through a buyer
claiming to have not received the item. They filed an ebay claim.
I showed ebay my postal receipt, showing the buyers name and address, but
since it was not delivery confirmation, the buyers claim was granted, and $$
taken out of my paypal account. Man, was I steamed!!!
Never again! Delivery confirmation always
for me . . .

Here
is a problem I ran into. I sold a part on Ebay and the buyer, who has a
business in selling Mopar parts, won the auction. He didn't say he wanted
insurance, so I sent it, but did not do a delivery confirmation. He says
he did not get the part. Thats been over 2 months now. My mistake was
not to do a delivery confirmation. I have never lost a part in the mail
and have sent parts world wide for quite a few years. Am I liable to
reimburse him because the mail system didn't get it to him (OR did
they). He did have an Ebay Disbute on this but that was closed because
it was over 45 days. The buyer now has the right to file a formal Fraud
Complaint with eBay Trust & Safety for this transaction. So what do
I do in a case like this when I really don't know if he got the part and
is trying to snooker me.
