so.... for comparison purposes.... can we say the 58 350 commando plymouth
is a good track match for the 56 dodges in question?? based on the better weight
transfer, weight, and power numbers??? what was the 56 d500- 260hp?
the 350 reported 305 if i remember, and the plymouth is within the 100lb range
of the dodge............i think an out-of-box 58 fury was reported at a 15.7....
i dont know- i just read articles and retain info- dont make a library of stock
facts as they only apply to 2 of my 36 cars... anyway
back to the 58 commando---
i have a '68 2bbl cammed 383 in my 59 fury daily driver- swapped on an iron
66 4bbl intake and 65 413 carter... dual exh, dead stock 727, 3.23 '65 300
suregrip rear.. now i raced a friend of mine as a joke with one of my former
pontiacs that i have at least 20 15sec flat timeslips on... needless to say-
blows my 59 away by 80mph by a good couple car lengths, so that same 59
fury that gets torn up by a 15 sec pontiac, tears up a stock 58 commando car a
friend of mine has.... off the line, and even worse on the highway from a 60-top
pull.... thus placing it in the high 15's-16 flat.. which statistically doesn't
make that much sense, essentially same weight, close gearing, and a claimed 305
hp against 290hp [2bbl rated/sing exh] which is more like 305 with a
4bbl/dual... just more cubes and torque at work.....
all that just comes down to is the 16 second time on the 56's sounds
right- and whoever is going to island, i'm there..... i'll put a 2x4
under my pedal or shut off 2/3 track in one of my 58s and try to run in the
16sec range too! for nostalgia purposes only that is
i scanned most of the posts about these cars- but lightly for quick info-
my only fwdlk dodges are 2 59s, crl and rl.... and 1 desoto... all else 57-8
plyms... so based on that it didn't apply to me to do more than take it as
conversation, but i did see a similarity in mph in regards to the varying
e.t.'s..... which a few replied to me about.... mph denotes hp.... the
times can vary by a whole second with only a 1-2mph gain, but within
parameters... of the range everyone is talking about....with the d-cars
they were great back then, and obviously beat pretty much everything across
the board back then... figuring only another chrysler product would hang with
the dodge- for had nothing to do the job... and i cant imaging a 265 chevy
in a 56, or even the olds getting under a 17sec pass... let alone the 22 second
322 nailhead in the buick for 56
so all in all, maybe 1 dodge did the amazing back then... their timing
equipment was close-to-par to modern towers... i just doubt it can be replicated
now if we had to, even with good tires and higher octane gas that we now can
throw in the cars
