What is the secret to aligning the cable at the transmission end, so
that my
car won't go into gear when it's in neutral ?

I have done this so many times, but it is getting to be ancient history
so the details seem fuzzy. Best I can remember .....
With cable properly attached at pushbutton assembly, locate cable to
trans with retaining clip loose and non-binding. Set neutral push button
and locate neutral position inside trans by pulling or pushing entire cable
sheath. This can be done by examining another car, trial and error, or the
quickest way is to simply start the car while in the air (on stands) with
the neutral safety switch disengaged. Once located, simply tighten trans
clamp and you're off to the races, Amigo !
