i have 2 sets of coker wide white radials- havent actually driven
much on them- had 2 of 4 14"s on my 58 for a summer- just about 3k... then
took them off to keep the full set fresh- however- 2 friends of
mine nearly lost their cars to the coker radials- a 56 buick lost a tread on a
rear tire- then a frt about 100 miles later- a 50 merc went off the road with
a separating coker radial, and a similar instance happened on a 55 olds on a
3hr trip....
however- i do advocate the coker www 4-ply tires- i went through 4 sets
already- daily driven that is- on those- you get about 20k [on the frts- the
rears sometimes get destroyed in one day at certain shows...]
anyway- my 59 has passed s10 blazers in the snow- so its just the coker
radials that arent up to standard- supposedly any tire with a carcass
date after 4/06 is safe- so i'm told....
the cheapest way out is a set of portawalls- now before everyone starts
knocking them..... if you know how to install them or go to any tire shop that
has at least 1 worker that made it out of high school- they work out
perfect- and the new style 'walls from atlas fit very tight to the sidewall-
and look just as [radially bad] as any radial whitewall- but going down the
road- they look great-- just put them on all 3 daily drivers- 58 plym, 59
fury, and 61 galaxie-- not for nothing, but no radial whitewall looks right
due to profile- so the points get knocked off anyway- you can use them on any
size/profile tire- just be realistic with them... some say you need to
run tubes- if you have a later radial - rated rim, there is enough bead area
to assure a leak free seat- granted i have all my own equipment and take
the personal care to base/clear my rims.... a hit of fresh spraybomb on a
clean sanded bead seat will assure a tight seal- even with the
portawalls.
of my 35 cars- the show-only cars either get correct piecrust wide white
bias-plys, or run around the streets on DOTs or slicks...
if you drive them all the time, rain or shine- think safe over
"correct"
