My 57 D500, with personalized plate costs about $60.00 per year, or
about $5.00/month.
And: what's WRONG with having a person pay Sales Tax (excuse me:
Transfer Fee, or what ever its called; it equals your county's tax rate;
here, it's 7.75%) ON his purchase-price, of a car?
The registration rate does go down, over time.
And, oh-YEAH; here in CA we CAN drive our cars year-around!

Rog, I think you also failed to mention Prop 13, which I'm sure that you
benefit from.
Your annual property tax can not rise more than 2%
I've owned my house since 1988 (paid-off its mortgage last year) and the
taxes on it are $1,200.00 .
I own an undeveloped residential parcel, in Sarasota County, FL, & the
tax rate on THAT puppy just went up to $1,600.00 !!!!
