You are supposed to, but
they usually start working anyway- check with a voltmeter or watch your ammeter,
if it says it is charging then it should be ok- this reminds me
tho-
If you change the battery
polarity, the other thing you need to do is reverse the leads to the
ammeter!
I used to take the cover
off the regulator and manually close the relays, one of them will cause the
generator to try and 'motor', and will stick closed unless you pry it open IIRC,
if you take the belt off you can watch it spin-up, and there was some
combination of relays that will make it spin even faster. This should also
have the side effect of polarizing a new generator, I always got confused
between 'internally grounded' and 'externally grounded' fields- I think one has
the field tied to the battery and grounds through the regulator, and the other
is grounded internally and the regulator provides the +12V/+6 to the field . . .
I have a question.When you put on a new generator do you have to polarize
