[FWDLK] '58 air cleaner

Apparently there's a sort of false bottom on my '58 DeSoto 361 2v air cleaner.  Darned if I can find the air intake to it, but the outlet is directly into the carb throat thru several slots.

 

Mine seems to have some crud in it that's apparent when you shake it.  Any ideas how to clean it out?  Cut a hole in the bottom?
