If the number is cast into the part that would be the part's castiung number and not ncessarily the part number. Chrysler Engineering had a 'log book' where every part was assigned a number. If s mirror had six parts (base, gasket, ball joint, mirror head, mirror glass, retaining ring) each would be recorded in the book and assigned a number. The number assigned to each part would appear on that part (if possible) and if a part was redesigned, it would be assigned a new number in the book. As well, the whole unit would be assigned a number and recorded in the book. .This last number would act as the part number. And now you know why some numbers found on parts are not in the parts catalogue and why the number on the box may not appear on the part inside.. Picked thus up from an article Jeff Godshall did on one of the early 1960's Mopar products - I believe it was the Dodge Custom 880. Bill. The number is cast into the part and is not stamped. Well the mistry goes on. I would guess that it is for an overdrive transmission but only a guess. Does anyone have a good guess as to what this part may be?
