If this bores you, kindly delete, now....but for the Forwardlooking "scholars", out there, this thread contains some neat pics of Ron Mog's (Apple Valley, CA) car/parts collection. The tread was posted on the FWDLK website's Forums, under "Miscellaneous for-Sale" section. Toward the end of the pics is a very instructive pic, of an OEM 56 NY'er under-trunk area. Firstly, you'll note that the 1-piece (I presume!) deadener-sheet was installed when the outer panel & the inner-support panel were "crimped" (no welds) together, as the underlying trunk skin is not painted (protected/shielded by the deadener). BTW, you ever wonder what YOUR car's trunk looks like, in this area??? Next, you will, obviously, see no evidence of any paint over-spray, on the deadener. Note the exposed edge, of the "loose/hanging" deadener, & you will only see an unpainted edge-surface. Then, note the OEM paint application "pattern". The painter was only applying the paint in an upward direction, and necessarily missed covering all the far-reaches of the opened trunk. As a side-note, the hoods were similarly installed/adjusted prior to their painting, so that there are also distinctive spray-patterns (paint and undercoating) on them (from front-to-rear), and, the back-edge of hoods "should" be partially-painted, on 'correctly' restored cars. Although not evident in this car/pic, the trunks were all painted after the trunk was installed, & checked for proper alignment. On any removed trunk, and hood, you will see an un-painted area, where the hinges were attached----that's one way to check for a re-painted panel; the hinge assemblies are sometimes not re- painted, or, poorly/obviously painted. Finally, and as previously discussed on this List, the L.A. built cars' trunks (beginning WHEN, and until-when??) received only a custom brew, of recycled/unused paint, which reportedly produced varying shades of gray finish, on them, regardless of the bodies' color. Detroit & Newark, NJ built cars' trunks received outer-trunk paint-color. I, personally, have not ever seen any evidence of factory-paint overspray, on the deadener- panels. The factory-painter started from a primered (or, maybe: bare-metal, in the case of L.A. cars), and applied all of the finish, which appears on the underside of the trunk, all-while not depositing a bunch of paint, on the deadener!!! BTW, does anyone recall seeing the "famous" factory-painter picture, showing a man, painting a (white) mid-60's Baracuda(?--iirc) , on the paint-line, but NOT wearing any 'respirator' (and, he might be smoking a cigarette, too-----????---too lazy to get out of my chair, & find/check-out that pic.)
