I’m not trying to start another fluidizing match, but I
just had the “coaxial” power steering unit in my 1955 Chrysler
C-300 overhauled and would appreciate input on what fluid to load it up with.
The Service Manual says Type A automatic transmission fluid, so here we go,
again. The old unit didn’t start sprouting major leaks until after
I started feeding it generic power steering fluid (that seems to be a little
lower viscosity than ATF).
The overhaul shop is non-committal on what fluid to use, but
did say the upper section of the unit is to be filled with 90-W gear oil.
All facts, opinions, experiences and references appreciated.
The shop painted the exterior of the unit with a glossy
battleship gray, but I’d rather they hadn’t for originality
purposes. Just something to remember when you take parts in for overhaul—specify
what kind of finish, if any, do you want. I had a power steering booster body
dipped in a goldine stuff and it looks great, but maybe not “factory”.
