Re: [FWDLK] Voltage Limiter on 56??

It may be possible to add a variable resistor in series with the gage and tune and calibrate it to the sending unit.  You can simulate and check out all of this off the car if you know the resistance of the sending unit at various levels.  I think the gages are just milliammeters calibrated to point a needle at E, F or in between in the variable-resistance 6V or 12V system.  I think the physics of DC circuits suggests that you will only have an approximation if you place a fixed resistance in series with the sender and gage—but all fuel gages I have ever seen are non-linear SWAG’s and approximations.

Anyone ever had a gage that said F when the pump kicked off?  Or you knew you were out of gas at E?  or that ¼, ½ or ¾ really were that?  I’m sure there are good reasons for bad readings, but I am not impressed with that particular bit of automotive engineering.

Maybe not.  It's not shown on the wiring diagram on page 407 of the '56 Ply FSM.

I just assumed the 12v systems did.

Well then, if it doesn't, can I use a voltage limiter with a '55 6v fuel gauge?
