The Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels were widely available to
Mopar, Hudson and Kaiser-Fraser owners in both chrome and painted
versions. In most cases if you were going to purchase the option at all
when new, then you went all the way and purchased the chrome versions.
Today you very rarely ever see the painted versions because all the
reproductions are only made in chrome and all the originals, if they have been
restored, have been done in chrome. However many original lower priced
cars such as Hudson Jets, Pacemakers and Wasps, and Plymouths and
Dodges often wore painted wire wheels in sedan and coupe versions while hardtops
and convertibles and upper end models like Commodores, Hornets, DeSotos and
Chryslers got the chrome wheels. I'll tell you this: painted wheels may
not need to be chrome polished but ALL wire wheels need some sort of spoke or
bottle brush to get them clean after driving in the rain!

(many miles with wire wheels but too old to keep them
clean any more!)
