[FWDLK] rubber boots over U joints

Has any one out there experience replacing the rubber boots that cover the U joints in the 1955 Dodge era?  I replaced mine and they both tore up and slung off with a vengeance.  That was a waste of $70.  I have a factory repair manual and followed the instructions, as to what it said.  Those things are a bear to install.
