Ray - It's quite difficult to 'lift the ID of a legit seller'. He would have to have the seller's password, right ? If the seller takes the necessary precautions, such as not using a public internet connection when listing items, he should not have any problems. Stealing pics from a legit auction or other source is another matter. Anyone that sees a Chrysler 300F convert as a BuyItNow for $6K should be suspicious, right ? But scammers have always been around. Hemmings has had its share of those long before the internet was in everyone's home. Caveat Emptor. As a seller, my feedback rating on ebay works in my favor. I ask for check or money order. Ebay sends out an email at the end of the auction with the seller's address, so the check will go to the correct address. As a buyer, if something smells fishy, I'll pass. This may be getting a little bit off FL discussion. Sorry about that. YOU got the money. For the buyer it is risky, he didn't know if your were legit or not. He trusted you. That's what the big deal is, when YOU are buying something. What often happens here is that a scammer lifts the ID of a legit seller (maybe you) and runs an auction of his own (you have no idea that this is happening). He lists something he copied off another ebay item. In the description he requires WU for payment, and with a phony ID, picks up the cash and is gone in the night. This happens often with WU, to the point that eBay tells you not to use it. Not because they want you to use PayPal, but because so many have been screwed. The buyer then contacts you and wants his stuff and you have no idea what he's talking about. Some of that is what you've been seeing with all these recent emails about the phony cars on eBay. As far as the money to PayPal goes, you are using a service and should pay for it. It's the cost of doing business, and after all YOU have invested nothing in your "store", so the fees are your "Rent", for eBay's tent. When you go to a flea market, you have to rent the table, no difference here. Also, I believe you can still go to WalMart and send large amounts of cash to someone elsewhere, they just go into their store and ID themselves and pick it up. It was very cheap the last time I did it. regards, Ray On Mar 9, 2006, at 10:49 AM, Ron Waters wrote: > I recently sold a brake booster to a guy in Sweden and he used an old > fashioned method of sending me the money--he wired it via Western > Union.
