My Coker tire experience - Last July I
purchased 4 Coker radial WWW for my ’59 Plymouth at the Iola Car Show. (I’m
going to purchase 5th one at the upcoming show) Coker had
their trailer at the show. On Saturday they wanted $165 per tire. I went
back on Sunday and talked to same guy and asked him for a catalog. Then I
said something like “if you give me a deal on the tires I won’t need
a catalog”. I guess it worked – I got them for $145
each – about a 12% discount. Needless to say, make sure you get the
correct size. Regarding radials vs bias – when I bought the
car several years ago it came with WWW bias tires. It steered and rode
terribly, no fun to drive. Shortly thereafter I installed radials.
The handling and steering improved 100%. That’s my personal
experience. Like they say in small print of some ads “your results may
vary”. I experimented by taking the radials/rims off of my Dodge
van (15”) and tried them on the Plymouth
(they fit). There was so much improvement that there was no question when it
came to radials vs bias. Regarding the rim issue – I’ve run
radials on my original rims for years (since 1999) with no problems, not to say
none will ever happen. And during summer months, my car doesn’t set
around – I drive it. I drove her from Wis
to Kansas City
and back a few years ago so with the miles I put on it, no problems (knock on
wood). Just a little side note – one of my sons has a Mazda 3
with 17” Goodyear tires. A few weeks ago he ran over something and
ruined tire. A new one cost him $220. When he told me that, the
cost of Cokers didn’t seem that high anymore. He’s now taken
out road hazard insurance. Might not be a bad idea for the Cokers. By the
way, so far I’m totally satisfied with my Cokers – only got about
1500 miles on them but the wear is good and the whitewall is white and the tire
guy who put them on my rims commented that they appeared to be a quality tire.

I was thinking of putting wide whites on my 1955 Imperial.
Not sure I want to start the bias/radial discussion gain but why not? I have
radials on the car now and am not really thrilled with ride and handling.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about
the tire discount. Here’s a few key points:
- As a ‘group’, we need to order 25 or more tires. We do
not need to all order the same type/size/brand – they can all be
different.
- Shipping of your chosen tires would be direct to you, and you would
arrange payment with Coker directly.
- When we get enough folks together, I will send out another email
with the details of who to call at Coker, and how to get in on the ‘group
deal’.
Just drop me a line if you’re
interested and I’ll get it all set up early next week for ordering with
Coker.
