As to the opposite, I lived in Baltimore which was where Chevy had the
El Camino plant at the time. Hot Rod Mag. ran a story in July 58 about
the '59 truck with Drag Strip test results.
I figured I had to have one of those beasts (even tho I thought they
were ugly), so I promptly went to my friendly Chevy Dealer to order
one. The said the plant was switching over to '60's the next week and
he called to see if I could get the order in. The answer was "We'll do
the best we can with what's on hand here in the plant." They said
they'd look around and see if there were any 409 HP engines, 4 speed
trans. and traction type rears on hand. They stated "You order the
truck and they'd put in What we have, and substitute for what we don't"
I said "No thanks" and went out and bought a '58 Impala conv with 348
tri-power 4 speed off of another dealers lot. Traded a Customized '51
merc conv in on it.
If we just had those cars NOW!!!

I have to agree with Neil on this one. It is not uncommon for all
manufacturers to substitute the next year parts on the end of the old
year's
models, if they are interchangeable. I have seen it before. My guess
is that
they are never totally sure how many late orders are going to come in
near
the end of the model year. So as not to get stuck with leftover parts,
they
order short on the old stuff and incorporate the new year's parts
early when
they run out.
I have seen the opposite too. My 56 Dodge (built October 1955) has
provisions in the frame to locate the mounts for a TorqueFlite
transmission.
These never reached production until the end of the 56 model year's
production, and then were only installed on some Chryslers and
Imperials.
Mopar planned in advance to install these in 56 Dodges, but never did.

....but I have seen/verified a relative-LOT of "late-year" 1957 Dodges,
which sported 1958 dashes, complete with r/view mirrors, & 1-piece
speaker/vent grilles, & parking brake handles.
The Detroit factory, quite simply, ran-out of 57 dashes, before the
m.y.
expired....
For the oldetymers, who remember the WPC Club, of the ought-80's, Dick
Kocher's all-black
CRL 2-dr HT D500 featured the 1958 dashboard.
This, alas, is not a Tale-fin, but a true-fact.
