Re: [FWDLK] Special Order

I worked in a body shop in my teens and one of the owners had special cars built. He loved Olds but hated the interiors. He liked the Pontiac interiors but didn't like the cars usually. So, every 2 years he went to Detroit and picked up a new Olds with a Pontiac interior. Don't know how he arranged it but this went on for years. I seem to remember that very special orders had to be picked up at a Dealer near whichever Factory built the car. The worse part of this is that one night after I was Married we were watching the 11 p.m. News and there was a head on with a fatality. They showed a close up of the car and I recognized it from the interior. Someone crossed the centerline on a curve and hit his wife head-on. She was killed instantly with not a mark on her, foot still on the gas pedal we were told later by cops that we knew. Had a hard time sleeping that night. The next day I had to go thru the car and clean it out before we sent it to the junk yard. Never found out the actual cause of death, but think she slammed the Steering wheel so hard it stopped her heart.

I had a best buddy who got a new car every 2 years. 57 Fury Stock, 59 'Vette, Special Ordered, 61 or 63 Pontiac GP, Special Ordered. Most were built special and he also had to go to Detroit to get the cars. The 57 Fury he tried to get Hollywood Mufflers on but they wouldn't do that. So, we bought 2 Steel Pack Mufflers, soaked them with Gas and burned them for 2 days. Painted them and when the car came in had them put on. Then when the cops got on him about his "pipes" he could truthfully say "It came from the dealer with these Hi-performance Mufflers on it". Never did get a ticket for the Pipes.

I worked at a foundry, once apon a time, and the owner worked
right alongside all of us in his bluejeans. His name was Charlie.
He knew I was a motorhead, and when the new cars came out we
talked them over. He wanted a new Olds Toronado when they
came out.? He asked me if I wanted to go with him, after work, to
the dealership and look them over.? Of course, I went along. So,
we look them over and the salesman is dogging Charlie's heels.
Charlie says he wants one. They go sit in the guy's office.? He
asks Charlie what he wants on the car. Charlie says leather seats.
They aren't available. He sales he will buy a Caddy. The salesman
asks if he is willing to pay extra, and let him make a phone call?
Charlie brings out a roll of money from his pocket and plunks it down.
He ended up with the only Olds Toronado with real leather that I
know about. Of course, it probably happened at other places.
Back then, we didn't care about codes and documents. I have no
idea what code they used for that one.

WHAT COULD BE ORDERED? AND WHAT COULDN'T BE ORDERED ON MOPARS???? HARD COLD?FACTS
?
?
?????? When I got into collecting and drag racing Plymouth Fury's in 1957 the High Performance Era was just beginning. When you ordered a new Chrysler Product there was a list of option and almost no one asked for something that was not on the list. ( times were different then, 98% of the buyers went by the rules.)
??????? However, if you were?knowledgeable and up to date on what options were in the planning stages and determined and told the dealer you would buy a GM or Ford product if you did not get that special interior, special color, special?engine, etc, etc, and if the dealer was a big dealer that sold a lot of cars and had a lot of pull with the company -------------then you got it even though it was not available. Now here is the thing that throws people off---------it was not documented most of the time?and there were no window stickers and the dealer invoice did not show it in the place it should be shown. Instead there was sometimes a little asterisk with a foot note saying something like " not offered option" and sometimes there was nothing mentioned but you got what you wanted. Remember, back then?buyers were special, not just numbers like they are today to a dealer. Naturally this was not something that everybody talked about? and it surely was not advertised that you could get things not offered as an option.
