Checked the fluid in my '57 Powerflite transmission yesterday. I have never driven the car, just moved it a couple car-lengths in the driveway (no brakes). Car would rev up, then grab, then sort of seize, rev, let go for a few feet, repeat, etc. Anyway, checked the tranny fluid, and it looks, smells and feels like oil. No color (clear), and thicker than any transmission fluid I know of.
Assume the original fluid is the Type A. Is the Type A anything like oil in color, texture and smell, even after many years? I am sorely tempted to just drain the fluid, replace any filter, and refill it. With what however? Type A (hear it is available in some farm stores), Dextron (I,II,III?), or whatever?
