Indeed, there is a rubber U-shaped "coupling" between the shaft and the
box - right where the two mate up. This U-shaped rubber coupling slips over
the flat end of the shaft. You will need to remove the steering column outer
tube to access it.  And, yes, these things do disintegrate with age, and
produce noticeable slop when they go.

Gary Goers carries reproduction ones. www.garygoers.com  ; better get one
before you take things apart (they are cheap - like $5 bucks or $10 bucks )
as I betcha you need one anyway.
