Re: [FWDLK] Rust on the late Fifties

Yes, I agree with Bob's assessment of cars from '57 -'60. I have a '55 Buick, that although the floor pans are rusty, the rest of the car is solid, Even the trunk, with the exception of the spare tire well, which has the very bottom rusted out. The metal in the '55 Buick seems very thick, in contrast to my '58 DeSoto, and even when compared to a '60 Buick I used to own. I guess that was the price for radical styling, it gave rust more nooks and crannies to form in. But, all-in-all, I'd say that it wasn't such a bad thing. There are a lot of Old cars that survive, and I think it's because people love the styling, and relative quality of those cars, not to mention simplicity. I work on newer cars for a living, and it can be nerve racking trying to diagnose them! It's a real refreshing experience working on old cars--simple,reliable and relatively inexpensive. I say relatively, because your average new car has a number of control units (computers) and they can run as high as $2,500.00 in some cars! I can fix a lot of stuff on my old car for that kind of money!! So, keep 'em rollin' ! Take care, all. And Happy New Year!   -Zach-
