Speaking of water pumps, - I thought I would pass
on something that we discovered here at Grove Automotive.
In the process of building a 330 DeSoto Hemi for a
customer, and one of the "issues" he wanted addressed was his "water pump
problem". Seems he has not had much luck with acquiring new or re-man
units, and was talking about using a "kit" from Hot heads that utilizes a
small-block Chevy(?) pump. Well, this kit is rather expensive (and
complicated I would think), and I took a look at the original setup and did a
little "brainstorming".
The pump itself looked amazingly "close" to being
the same as for the BB (361/440) Chrysler engines. Did a little
"measuring" and discovered that the overall height was indeed the same, - the
impellor sticks into the water pump housing the same amount (and matches the
"angle" of the original), and the only difference is the mounting bolt pattern
(where the pump bolts to the housing), and that is very close. Also, the
"opening" in the housing is slightly smaller.
What we did was send the housing out to a local
"fabricator", - and he filled the original bolt holes in the
housing, drilled new ones matching the "B" engine water pump, and slightly
enlarged the opening.
We now have a 330 DeSoto Hemi water pump housing
that will accept the (readily available) "B"-engine water pump.
Not sure how many FWDLK-era engines this will apply
to, - but I thought the info was worth passing along.
Happy New Year to all!
