NY plates alternate yellow on black and black on yellow through the 1950's -
1958, 1962 were yellow; 1964 black; in 1965-6 went to yellow on blue through
about 1972, then reversed until the 1980s when the liberty plate was
adapted. They were tied to vehicle inspection and issued every other year
in the 50's - for the odd years you got a little metal corner tag with the
next year to cover the previous, and it was colored opposite.
