James, I don't know if your steering column end in your 59 is the same as in my 60, but mine has a knife-blade type finger end that slips into a U shaped groove in the steering box spline adapter (one side is female spline, the other is the U slot). When the rubber bushing in mine wore out, I had my steering box rebuilt, and replaced the idler arm bushing. While the column was out, I made my own modern bushing out of silicone, but that was too soft. Then I tried making one out of hard poly plastic, the kind your wastepaper basket is made of. Actually, I took a rubbermaid bin and sliced rectangles, which I epoxied together and shaped for a perfect fit. Now the steering on my Saratoga is no different than on any new car--nice and tight.
