Interesting. That rational makes sense. For what it is worth, I know the NOS body panels for a '46 Pontiac I owned were black. This topic has visited this list from time to time. As I recall, gray, or some shade they of seemed to be the most common trunk color. I think it was mentioned that the paint used was a mixture of all the left over paint, thus the color. Not sure if that if correct, but that is what I remember being mentioned.
