Not sure what the "A" is all about, but the serial number is 38 013 180. The 1957 Dodge used a serial number that was strictly a serial number. Its numbers could not be decoded into anything else. Think of it as a modern 17-digit VIN without the first 11 digits, and where the series began with the 1924 Chrysler Six at 1001. The number continued from there, breaking into the six digits in the early 1930's and 7-digits in the late 1930's. Generallym and this is an extremely wide coverage here, American Plymouth serial numbers started with "1" or "2", Dodge started with "3" or "4", DeSoto with "5" ot "6" and Chrysler with "6" ot "7". Trucks (Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto or Fargo) started with "8" or, before 1945, "9". Vritually all Canadian production started with "9". Anyway, serial numbers for the 1957 Dodge models were : D72 Coronet 6 - Hamtramck, : 32 255 001 to 32 292 657 D66 Coronet V8 - Hamtramck : 35 172 001 to 35 303 713 D66 Coronet V8 - LosAngeles : 42 620 001 to 42 631 610 D67 Royal/C.Royal - Hamtramck : 37 240 001 to 37 321 614 D67 Royal/C.Royal - LosAngeles : 45 540 001 to 45 547 041 D70 Suburban/Sierra - Hamtramck : 38 001 001 to 38 025 513 D71 Custom Sierra - Hamtramck : 38 535 001 to 38 542 217 D67-3 Custom Royal - Windsor : 99 028 601 to 99 035 648 1957 engine numbers were D72-1001 to D72-9600 and KDS6-6901 to KDS6-18892 for the Coronet 6 and KDS-1001 to KDS-287536 and American Dodge V8 models. Canadian engine numbers were D67-1001-C and up. So, your 1957 Dodge Suburban wagon, 38 013 180, was the 12,180th 1957 Dodge Suburban or Sierra wagon built at Hamtramck out of 24,513, given that Suburban/Sierra serial numbers run from 38 001 001 to 38 025 513. And that is all you can tell from the serial number.
