Sounds similar to a hood hinge problem I had on my 57 Fury, except my problem was the hood, when closed, would hang up from the cowl and fender about 3/4 of an inch, until you pressed it down with the palm of your hand. There was very little slop evident in my hinges, but when I replaced my rivets, the problem went away completely. My hinges are now mint. Good luck.
