[FWDLK] oil cup on distrib

Nick,

There are actually 4 lubrication points on the distributor, "every 1000 miles or 30 days":

1. The oil cup gets 5 - 10 drops of light engine oil. This lubes the upper shaft bushing. If this bushing wears, the shaft will have excessive side play, causing the point cam to move and randomly vary the point gap and timing.

2. The felt wick under the rotor at the top of the shaft gets 2 - 3 drops of oil. This lubes the joint between the point cam/plate assy and the shaft. If this sticks, the cam will not advance when driven by the mechanical advance weights. The result is a huge drop in performance and mileage.

3. The pivot point for the moving point contact gets one drop of oil. Work it in a little and wipe off the excess.

4. The rubbing block of the points gets a special rubbing block grease. This can be found in a small tube at your local parts store. This slows down the rate of wear on the rubbing block and extends the interval between point adjustments.

5. If the distributor is disassembled for service, the bearings in the breaker plate for the vacuum advance and the mechanical advance weight pivots also get lubed.

Consult your Shop Manual "Lubrication" section for details and illustrations.

On my distributor is a small oil cup with a wick in it I assume, what kind
of lube should I put in the cup and what does it actually lube ?
