[FWDLK] Flopping Speedo Needle

Joe,

It sounds like the bushing at the back of the speedo is dry. I am not sure about others, but I would assume that all Mopars of the period are similar. On a 56 Dodge, at the back of the speedometer, there is a hollow cylinder with a felt plug in it. It is about 1/4 inch in diameter, 3/4 inch long, and has a screwdriver slot on the end. Unscrew it, add light motor oil to the felt plug until saturated, and return it. There is a paragraph and illustration on this subject in the "Lubrication" section of the 56 Dodge Shop Manual.

I found this hollow cylinder by accident many years ago. I had a 56 Dodge, my daily driver, where the speedo started to go crazy, jumping from 0 to 120 and making loud screeching sounds. I tried graphite and oil down the cable, but no success. I figured I couldn't make it worse, so I removed it and started to dissasemble it, when I found the hollow cylinder. I have fixed 2 other Dodges this way. On cars without this hollow cylinder, I have applied oil directly to the end of the bushing when the cable is unpluged.

It would be a good idea, if everybody reviewed and followed the "Lubrication" section of their Shop Manuals periodically, especially since on many of our cars some of the annual lubrication points haven't been serviced in decades.

My speedometer needle flops around like a fish out of water.  What does this normally indicate?  Bad cable, Bad connection between cable and speedometer, bad gear inside the speedometer, other?

Thanks!

See ya,  Joe.
