I have used POR-15 to recondition gas tanks as it is supposed to be
impervious (their word) to gas and oil. On my 80 Dodge van gas tank I had a
couple pin hole leaks on bottom of tank (under straps) and at least 13 pin
hole leaks on top of tank. I applied a coat of POR on tank and while still
tacky laid fiberglass matting on tank and then liberally applied another
coat on top of fiberglass. In one hole on bottom of tank I screwed in a
sheet metal screw with a rubber washer before applying the POR and
fiberglass. This was a few years??? ago and still no leaks and I don't
drive the van that much, which isn't good for the gas tank. A friend of
mine who dislikes bondo and warps sheet metal when welding used this same
method with POR and fiberglass in repairing rust holes in doors on his
T-bird. After priming, sanding and painting, you cannot detect the repair
area. I've been told by a POR rep that you can paint over POR anytime if
you rough up the surface by sanding, then the paint would adhere to the POR.
