I believe Paul is right. I have an old book on fuels around here some where and I believe I read in there that it made the old cars (Model A's and such run a bit better but it was hard on them because it had poor antiknock qualities which in our language means it lowered the octane rating. 104 does a great job of bringing current fuel up to snuff as does a couple of gallons of AV 100 or 110. I found the chemical explanation in the previous entry very interesting. Thanks for the effort.
