I know that Ford was hoping that to be the case, though I don't think it
happened to any significant degree.    I suspect that DeSoto was hurt by the
recession in 1958, only to be again crippled by a downturn in the economy
again in 1961.  It is interesting that Rambler was the only car that
increased its sales in '58.  I'm not old enough to remember all this stuff
first-hand; perhaps some others folks here can offer some thoughts as well.
