Checking several mopar manuals 55 chrysler, 55/56 Plymouth, and 66 Plymouth, the ONLY reference to hardened valve seats was for the flathead 6!!!! And that was sort of buried on p.208 (apparently with the 6 around for so long and the 277 a new engine, that manual concentrated on the v8). Looks like only the old boat anchor flathead 6 has hardened exhaust valve inserts!!!!! So much for 'common knowlege' of early mopars having same. No one ever defines early, or if its a 6 or an 8 for this bit of apparent folklore. Almost as bad as the Fish carburetor.... Hope this clears up my and others misconceptions!!!! Including my own? L. However I am still not 'aware' of any problems with my 277 using unleaded regular for the last 5 years and 15k miles. Runs like a strip-ed assed ape! |
