For reference.... quick visual cues as to whether a transmission is for a Big Block (B)/Late Hemi or a Small Block(LA)/Poly Motor(A)... 1. Top bellhousing bolts are a little less than 6 7/16" (6.42") apart on the "B" motors, and a little more than 7 3/4" (7.76") on "A/LA" motors 2. The dowel pins on "A" and "LA" motors are on the same horizontal plane, parallel to the ground. One "B" and Late Hemi motors, the driver's side dowel is about 4 3/4" higher than the one on the passenger side. Also, according to Chrysler, the Early Hemi (301/331/354/392) "bellhousing pattern at the back of the block is close to the same as the 318-340-360 (LA) engine. The "A" transmission or bellhousing will bolt to the back of the block, but the torque converter or flywheel will not be in the proper position. This is because of the increase in overhang of the 'old style' Hemi crankshaft. ....Therefore an adapter is needed that acts basically as a spacer to use the 340 type transmissions". Steve |
