Compression doesn't effect oil pressure. It may tell you if the engine has bad rings, which is another sign of a worn out engine. Since the car is in the shop, tell the mechanic to check the true oil pressure by installing a gauge in place of the oil pressure sending unit and running the car. If the oil pressure truely is low, this will tell you that and say how much. It can also indicate which bearings might be causing the primary problem if there is one. A pulsing needle on the gauge usually means worn main bearings. This test is simple and will tell you what is going on. If the oil pressure isn't low, then your sending unit (I think the Check Gauges light has its own for oil pressure) is probably bad. We still are interested in knowing what the oil pressure gauge in the car is showing when this light comes on. The Check Gauges light monitors the fuel gauge and the engine temperature as well, so there may be something other than oil pressure causing the problem. Now I'm a little concerned about the engine. I'm going to have the mechanic do a compression test on it. Would that determine the problem? ?Where can ?I buy ?a rebuilt 440 engine if needed. Will 1974 440 engine fit? I really what this car to be mechcanically sound. I want to do all this stuff if though the winter months. > >Thanks everybody. > >Dick Benjamin <dickb@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: >v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}.shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);}st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) } >Paul has already listed the main causes. ?Any of these causes is expensive to repair. > > > >There are other possibilities, such as the wrong oil being used (you should be using at least either straight SAE30W or 15W40, depending on where you live, low oil quantity, or a worn oil pump. ? > > > > I ask you again, what does the gauge read when this is going on? > > > >Dick Benjamin > > > >--------------------------------- > > >From: mailing-list-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mailing-list-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of louis colon >Sent: Thursday, December 02, 2004 3:27 PM >To: mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx >Subject: RE: IML: 1968 Check Gauges light/Oil Pressure > > > > >What can cause low oil pressure. I had a 69 imperial many years ago and had the same problem but I thought it was the alternator not putting out enough juice. It has anew battery and the alternator was checked. > > > > > >Thanks Guys and Girls. > > >__________________________________________________ >Do You Yahoo!? >Tired of spam? Yahoo!
